Reading Roots Literacy is proudly Canadian and has always integrated scientifically proven systematic, explicit phonics instruction with meaningful context-rich reading experiences. The Alberta Language Arts curriculum has recently changed to focus on the science of reading, but keep those levelled books you have been using. With the Roots programs children will learn the decoding skills they need, while still enjoying wonderful literature.
See why our program and the Alberta government champion systematic phonics to build a foundation for reading comprehension.

Our programs have taught thousands of Albertans, and their success has shaped how we grew our program.

The core learning is supported by a variety of activities to stimulate students and reinforce the fundamentals. Below are games and activities you will find in the programs.

Students colour the pictures in their personal readers to bring the stories to life and reinforce words. While students colour, teachers can work one-on-one with students to hear each one read.

Students have hands-on with the letters, spelling words with magnetic graphemes and then changing one letter to make another word as directed by the teacher. ie. Change "book" to "look."

Students read together in pairs the words and graphemes on cards. Cards are self-correcting with a picture of the word on the back. They take turns being the teacher and testing their knowledge.

For each reader the students cut up a list of words and put little words under the matching pictures. A fun way to practice reading the words and reinforcing the word construction with touch.

Students try to match face-down words and pictures and remember where they are for their next turn. Another fun way to reinforce memory and recognize whole words.

Each reader has a word picture matching activity. Students read the little words and put them under the matching picture.
Jenny Miller’s reading programs have been enabling readers and making positive impacts in classrooms all over the world. Here is just a snippet of what people are saying.
Having worked in a mid-sized Canadian public school system for nearly 30 years as teacher, school principal and system administrator, I observed first-hand the positive impact of Reading Sprouts and Reading Roots on beginning and struggling readers. During my career, no other program rivalled the results in terms of students achievement as clearly born-out by the provincial test result. On the international front, Reading Sprouts and Reading Roots has proven to be the most effective program for non-native English language learners. The positive results have improved both young and mature learners. The approach employed by Jenny Miller is time-tested and proven to work in Canada and abroad.
This program was instrumental in giving me the tools I needed to teach my students to read. Reading Roots is unique in that it is a complete program that takes students from learning the letter sounds to independent reading and writing without missing the small steps in between. My colleagues and I are passionate about the Reading Roots program, but so are the students and parents. Students enjoy the stories in the readers and are excited to colour their own books and take them home to show their parents what they have learned. Parents are thrilled at how quickly their children are learning and embrace the program as eagerly as the teachers when they see how their children have been taught that most important skill of learning to read. I would recommend this program to all parents and teachers who want to ensure reading success.
Reading Roots is undoubtedly the most valued reading program I use as a reading teacher. Coming from a teaching background in England, Ireland, Alberta and now presently employed in B.C. Jenny Miller has boosted my knowledge and skills in knowing how to teach reading in a way that none of my College or University courses was able to do. The beauty of Reading Roots is that it provides a teacher with all of the teaching materials, ideas, techniques and guidelines to take a student from the initial to the final stage in the process of learning how to read. The hands on teacher-friendly lay out, and the bold student friendly printed materials are an amazing asset in the classroom. The care and thoughtful planning that Jenny has devoted to creating this superb reading program has saved me immeasurable time in the preparation and organization of my reading classes.
After many years of struggling with helping my son, Tristyn, with his ability to read through a variety of "proven" learning facilities, Tristyn after 2 years still had not made any progress. I was then referred to Jenny's program of Reading Roots. Jenny's method brought my son from a Grade 1 reading level to a Grade 6 level in less than one year. Reading Roots is a straightforward and easily teacher /parent led program. I was able through constructive coaching by Jenny to achieve great success at home. I believe so much in this program that I am now using Reading Roots for teaching my daughter Mariah to read. Mariah in only a few sessions is already reading simple words!
